Conservatives keep putting forth the ridiculous argument that things are indeed getting better in Iraq, that we can win the “hearts and minds” of the Iraqi people. The reality is that every day there are new reports of some type of violence that flared up. Logically, if even one car bomb, murder, or demonstration takes place anywhere in Iraq, that is clear evidence that the entire populace should return to the dictatorial oppression that they enjoyed under Saddam. Only until Iraq can record a substantial period of time that is free from violence can there be any claim that the efforts to liberate the hearts and minds of the Iraqis have been successful.
Iraq has a population of about 27 million, and the estimated number of active terrorist combatants in Iraq stands around 40,000. Based on these numbers, the terrorists comprise nearly one fifteenth of one percent, or 1/675th of the population. When one considers the fact that one in 675 Iraqis are causing the violence, there can be no other conclusion but to have the 674 peaceful citizens yield to the demands set forth by the single violent one. In the case of Iraq, the entire population should be willing to resurrect their totalitarian government since a tiny minority demands it. It is obvious that all attempts to reason with the dissenters has failed, so the only rational option left is to accede to the demands of those few that initiate the violence.
And the minority is right. Under Saddam, the Iraqi people knew peace and tranquility, for no citizen dared to launch an anti-government action because the retribution from Saddam would have been too great. Case in point was the decimation of the village of Ad Dujayl because it was the location of an attempt on the life of Saddam. One or two individuals launched a strike, and the entire population of the village was murdered or tortured in retaliation. This example made the desire to commit violent acts wane, and the people had a calm environment in which to live. Contrast that level of peace with the violence that has occurred since the liberation, and it is easy to see that people are better off under the thumb of a dictator in cases where their liberation results in a period of violent conflict. Ergo, the Iraqi people were better off under the dictatorship of Saddam than they are now simply because a few citizens are willing to resort to violence as a means to get their way.
When the peaceful past is compared with the contemporary reports of daily violence, it is time to admit that our intervention was made in error. If we would realize our folly and completely withdraw from the area, the Iraqi people could once again return to their peaceful ways and avoid any further bloodshed. We should recognize the right of a violent minority to control the destiny of a law abiding majority, and rather than crush those that are instigating the unrest, we should encourage the Iraqi people to once again don he yoke of oppression and let the violent minority enslave them.
We should then take heed of the example provided to us by the situation in Iraq, and make some amendments to our own statutes here in the States. We have tried to enforce law and order since the inception of our nation, and still we have murder, rape, assaults, and other forms of violence occurring every single day. Since it is clear that we cannot stop such incidents, we should toss in the towel and allow the criminal element to take control. Law abiding citizens need to forsake their quest for a peaceful society, and finally concede defeat. Once the violent minority has their hands on the reigns, our nation will be able to have the same level of peace that the people of Iraq will enjoy under the rule of the terrorists.
